Clad in white, Munnar Shivers in hard winter

Kerala’s most sought after tourist destination Munnar is experiencing a very unusual climate phenomenon.This year the delayed winter freezes Munnar to sub zero even in the month of February, for the first time in the history.

Normally, winter season starts here in the month of November and during the first week of January it lasts with intermittent snowfall.

However, this year, winter started here in the first week of January and during the first two weeks of February the weather reached sub zero here. The snow capped top station grass land and the countryside of Vattavata are still getting heavy snow fall.

Minus 1 degree Celsius was recorded in Latchmi estate on Thursday.

As the winter freezes Munnar, farmers are worried about this year’s harvest.

The temperature recorded at various places in Munnar on Thursday was- Letchmi estate -1, Munnar UPASI 1 and Chenduvarai 1. On Wednesday Nallathanni recorded 0 degree Celsius, Chenduvarai and Seven Malai and Silent Valley 0 degree Celsius recorded. The lowest temperature was recorded in Nallathanni Letchmi, Seven Malai and Silent Valley as 0, -1, 0 and +2 Degree Celsius respectively on Tuesday, ” stated the data from United Planters Association of South India (UPASI) tea research foundation.
