Europe to Digitize Schengen Visa Application Process for Effortless Travel

Travelling to Europe can often mean applying for a visa to a specific country, but a Schengen visa can allow entry into multiple member nations. However, the current process can be cumbersome, involving multiple visits to consulates for verification. To streamline this, EU member states have proposed digitizing the Schengen visa application process.

The European Union Council has released a statement outlining the plan to replace visa stickers with a digital version. The main goal is to make the entire process more efficient, as well as to reduce the risk of visa forgery and theft.

Here are some of the perks of this digital system:

Online Application Process: The application process will be conducted online, with a single platform and website for Schengen visa applications. Travelers can upload all required documents electronically and pay the fees, and will be notified of the decision digitally.

In-Person Appearance Required Only for First-Time Applicants: The rules state that only first-time applicants and those whose biometrics have expired from the system need to appear in person. People submitting new documents will still need to visit the consulate.

Automatic System: The website will automatically decide which country is responsible for examining the process, based on the duration of the stay. However, applicants can choose a particular member state for processing.

2D Barcode: The digital visas will be issued with a 2D barcode with a cryptographic signature, which will reduce the risk of stolen visa stickers.

Overall, digitizing the Schengen visa application process will make it easier for legitimate travelers to apply, while simultaneously making the Schengen area safer. It will also reduce the number of trips to consulates for travelers and make the process smoother for national administrations.
