France scraps transit visa for Indian passport holders in major travel relief

Indian travellers have received a major boost after France removed the airport transit visa requirement for Indian passport holders, making international journeys through French airports easier and quicker.

The new rule came into effect on April 10, 2026, and applies to passengers using France only as a transit point while travelling to another country.

The decision means Indian nationals will no longer need to apply for a separate Airport Transit Visa when changing flights at French airports, provided they remain inside the international transit zone and do not pass through immigration control. This is expected to benefit thousands of passengers travelling to destinations across Europe, North America and other regions through hubs such as Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Earlier, many Indian passengers had to complete an additional visa process even for short layovers in France, adding extra cost, paperwork and waiting time. With the latest move, travel planning is likely to become more convenient and affordable.

The development also reflects stronger mobility ties between India and France, with both countries taking steps in recent months to improve travel and educational exchanges. France has also announced measures aimed at attracting more Indian students in the coming years.

What Indian travellers should note

  • No airport transit visa required for eligible Indian passport holders
  • Applies only to airside transit within the international zone
  • Passengers must not enter French territory during layover
  • Separate visa may still be needed if exiting the airport or entering France
  • For Indian travellers looking for smoother and faster connections, France has now become a more convenient transit option.
