Germany scraps airport transit visa for Indians

Germany has eased its transit visa rules for Indian nationals, offering a significant relief to travellers. Beginning June 3, Indian passengers transiting through German airports on their way to a third country will no longer be required to obtain an airport transit visa, the German Embassy announced.
The change is expected to benefit thousands of Indian tourists, students, professionals and business travellers who use major German aviation hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich to connect to destinations across Europe, North America and Latin America. Previously, many Indian passport holders were required to secure an airport transit visa even when remaining within the international transit area of a German airport.
The decision follows German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India last month and is seen as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and facilitate greater mobility between the two countries. Germany and India have been working to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, technology, education, clean energy and skilled workforce mobility.
Travel industry experts believe the move will make Germany a more attractive transit hub for Indian travellers by reducing paperwork, cutting travel costs and simplifying international journeys. The relaxation is also expected to encourage greater passenger traffic through Germany’s major airports while improving connectivity between India and destinations across the globe.
The visa exemption applies only to airport transit passengers travelling onward to another country and does not affect entry requirements for travellers intending to enter Germany or the wider Schengen Area.
