Trial of vaccine against Coronavirus is due in the US

As the coronavirus pandemic is spreading fast across the world, health scientists are on their toes to develop a vaccine that can contain the deadly virus.

A vaccine that can prevent the disease is being designed in the US and a clinical trial to evaluate its potency will begin soon. There is anonymity regarding the participants on whom the first trial will be conducted and their names and details will not be announced publicly.

According to a report by the Associated Press, this first trial is funded by the National Institutes of Health and it will take place at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle.

Public health officials also say that this is just a trial and it will take more than a year or over 18 months to authenticate and come out with a probable vaccine.

As of now, tests will be done on 45 young, healthy volunteers who will be administered different doses of the shots that are developed together by NIH and Moderna Inc, the report said.

Also, it has been guaranteed that none of the volunteers will get an infection from the shots since they don’t contain the virus at all. The only goal of this trial is to understand if there are any worrisome side effects which may eventually set the stage for larger tests, AP said.

Also, there is a race around the world among research groups so as to be the first to develop the vaccine against this virus.

Funnily, all are pursuing the development of different types of vaccines. Some are developing shots with the help of new technology that are not just faster to produce but are also more potent. Some other researchers are aiming to produce a temporary vaccine that will at least calm the present situation. This temporary solution might give a person a health cover for at least a month or two, the report said.

Although, the symptoms caused by this virus is just mild or moderate in a majority of people, the older adults and people with health issues are known to be affected severely. For the latter people, this can even lead to severe cases like pneumonia. At present, the number of people sickened because of the virus is more than 156,000 and more than 5,800 have died because of the virus. The death toll in US alone is more than 50, while around 3000 people are infected across 49 states including the District of Columbia.

Although a vast majority are known to recover, the time period from recovery varies according to the severity of the illness. People with mild illness recover in about two weeks while those that are severely affected may take three to six weeks to recover, the AP report said.
