Indian tourists prefer sustainable, eco-friendly destinations: Report

According to Booking.com, 59% of Indian travelers are now conscious of how their travel impacts local communities and the environment. The company’s ‘10th Annual Sustainable Travel Report,’ which surveyed 32,000 travelers across 34 countries, reveals that 63% of Indian respondents want to leave destinations better than they found them.
The report highlights a significant shift in attitudes towards eco-conscious and community-focused tourism in India. A remarkable 96% of Indian travelers consider sustainable travel important, while 99% express a desire to make more sustainable choices in the future.
Additionally, 74% of respondents said that tourism has a positive influence on their local communities. Indian travelers are also favoring solutions that directly support communities, including improved waste management (49%), enhanced transportation infrastructure (46%), and environmental conservation efforts (42%).
The survey found that 77% of Indian tourists seek experiences rooted in local culture, and 68% want their spending to benefit local communities directly. Moreover, 69% support local businesses, and 66% show respect for local traditions while traveling.
The report concludes that Indian travelers in 2025 are increasingly adopting responsible travel behaviors—from reducing their carbon footprint to choosing eco-conscious businesses — marking a growing trend of purposeful and impactful tourism.
