Govt issues urgent message as LPG panic spreads

Amid rising concerns over fuel availability, the Centre on Wednesday assured that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG across the country, urging people to avoid panic buying.

The government attributed the long queues at petrol pumps in certain areas to rumours and panic purchases, rather than actual supply issues.

No LPG supply to households if they refuse PNG switch where available

The Hindustan Times article explains that the Indian government has ordered households to switch from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas (PNG) wherever pipeline connectivity exists. If a household refuses PNG despite availability, LPG supply will be discontinued three months after notification.

The directive, issued under the Essential Commodities Act, is meant to strengthen energy security amid LPG shortages linked to West Asia. PNG offers uninterrupted supply and removes the need for refills. The order also sets strict timelines for approvals, requires housing complexes to allow pipeline access, and mandates last‑mile PNG connections within 48 hours once approved.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) will oversee enforcement, ensuring compliance and accelerating India’s gas network expansion while reducing reliance on imported LPG.

No shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG

Officials confirmed that India has sufficient refining capacity and fuel stocks to meet demand.

“We have the capacity to refine approximately 26 crore tonnes of crude oil annually. There is no shortage at any petrol pump,” the government said, adding that fuel prices also remain unchanged.

On LPG supply, authorities said availability remains stable across the country.

“There is no shortage at any LPG distributorship. Online booking is functioning normally, and allocations are being made nationwide,” the statement added.

Govt prioritising PNG CNG supply

The centre highlighted that Piped Natural Gas connections remain a key priority, with full supply being ensured to domestic consumers.

Similarly, Compressed Natural Gas used in transportation is being supplied without disruption.

Kerosene supply increased as backup

To strengthen energy availability, the government has also increased kerosene allocation as an alternative fuel.

Additional supply orders have already been issued in around 16 states and union territories.

Crackdown on misuse

Authorities have stepped up enforcement to prevent misuse and hoarding.

Around 2700 raids were conducted across states, leading to the seizure of nearly 2000 LPG cylinders.

No change in LPG booking rules

The government also dismissed reports claiming changes in LPG refill booking timelines, clarifying that existing rules remain unchanged.

The Centre reiterated that fuel supply across India remains stable and sufficient, urging citizens to rely on official information and avoid panic-driven purchases.
