Man in Bihar registers his 6.25-acre land in the name of his two pet elephants after hearing the tragic deaths of elephants in Kerala

Hearing the news of the tragic deaths of the elephants in Kerala, a man from Janipur ,Patna  has donated his entire land for the well being of his  pet elephants. He says one of them had saved his life from a criminal. Mohammad Akhtar (50) has two pet elephants, Moti and Rani aged 20 and 15 years and he claims that one of them had saved his life.

According to him Moti had gone along with a mahout to Bhojpur district’s Shahpur area, where Moti fell ill.” I had to rush there to treat him. One day, when I was sleeping, I was woken up by Moti’s roar. I saw one man pointing his gun just outside the window. I ran away to save my life,” IANS report said.

Being the chief of the Asian Elephant Rehabilitation and Wildlife Animal Trust (AERAWAT), an NGO ,Akhtar as he is very fond of elephants registered his entire land in the name of his pet elephants. “I gave my 6.25-acre land to the two elephants to ensure that when I am not alive, the animals do not suffer hunger,” Akhtar told IANS.

Akhtar also said that Moti and Rani are the “children” of the elephants which he inherited from his ancestors. “I have lived with them since my childhood. The two are my family members,” he said.

However he alleges that some of his own family members have joined with animal smugglers and are trying to sell the elephants to them. As he hampered their move, they are angry with him and attempting to kill him. He made a complaint to the Chief Wildlife Warden and to the Patna police chief.

Akhtar also trains mahouts. He appeals for the government intervention in protecting elephants as “the time is not far when we would see the elephant only in books”. He said. According to him elephants are wandering around the villages in search of food.
