Struggling with summer heat? This simple pranayama could bring relief

As people in India try to elude the scorching grip of summer in the coolness of air conditioners and hill stations, they often forget traditional yoga methods such as Sheethali Pranayama, which has proved effective in reducing body temperature and providing solace during summer.

Sheethali Pranayama
As the name suggests, this pranayama is capable of cooling down the body. It can be practised in Padmasana, Siddhasana or Sukhasana. Sit erect and push out the tongue to match the shape of a crow’s beak (known as Kakimudra). Now inhale through the mouth and exhale through both nostrils. Repeat this six times. The proportion between inhalation, retention of breath and exhalation should be 6 mathras: 24 mathras: 12 mathras.

Yoganidra
Also known as Shavasana, this yoga practice is highly beneficial for peace of mind and concentration. Lie down facing upwards and keep the legs apart. Keep the hands slightly away from the body, with the palms facing upwards. Breathe normally in this position for 5-10 minutes. Concentrate and then relax all parts of the body one by one. Practise this for some time and you will feel relaxed in both body and mind. Take long breaths while getting up.
