WHO chief praises India for its vaccine approval decision

Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has praised Indian government for its decision to give emergency use permission for Covid vaccines, the Oxford and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

“#India continues to take decisive action & demonstrate its resolve to end #COVID19 pandemic. As the world’s largest vaccine producer it’s well placed to do so,” tweeted WHO chief.

Hailing the efforts of PM Modi, Tedros wrote,  “If we #ACTogether, we can ensure effective & safe vaccines are used to protect the most vulnerable everywhere @narendramodi”.

Being one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world, India has all set to start its vaccination drive, which is believed to be the largest in the world, aiming to provide vaccines for a population of 1.3 billion .

India has given emergency use approval for the use of the Oxford and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin in which oxford Astra Zenceca vaccine is being produced by Serum Institute of India – the largest vaccine producer. Ingenuously developed Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin has also secured permission from the central government to use its vaccine in restricted manner. According to reports, India has also received permission for the mass production of the vaccines such as Novavax and Gamaleya Research Institute vaccines.
